Myth busters about Celiac

There are a couple of myths about having celiac that I thought I’d clear up.

Myth number one: If you are gluten free then you will lose weight.

Answer: That is not always the case. In fact, once I was properly diagnosed with celiac and started having the right foods back in my diet, my body was like, “Thank you!” and returned to a normal healthy weight and actually gained back the weight I had lost when I didn’t know what was wrong with me. My stomach was finally able to absorb all the nutrients again. So sadly, it is not the trick to losing weight.

Myth number two: If you are have celiac, it will eventually go away.

Answer: No. It does not go away. There is no cure for it, but it can be maintained by the proper food and exercise. And a proper diagnosis from a doctor.

Myth number three: If it says gluten free, then it must be.

Answer: Most of the time, it is true. But things like salad dressings and marinades have hidden ingredients, so always check the label! Especially soy sauce!

Myth number 4: Gluten free food tastes bad.

Answer: Only some of it tastes bad. So if it does, don’t eat it! Ha!
